1. In Michigan, the Brown Recluse and the Northern Black Widow spiders are considered dangerous. The Brown Recluse is the most dangerous, hiding in dark areas…gloves, undisturbed clothing, bed sheets. It has violin shaped markings and is creamish brown to dark brownish gray in color. Urgent medical attention is required if you are bitten. Check old clothing, blankets and outdoor wear this spring and avoid potential spider bites.

2. Do you hear gnawing and scratching in your walls or ceiling or see mice droppings? Mice can chew through insulation, cables, electrical wires creating a potential fire hazard, entering through un-caulked areas around pipes, phone lines and worn door thresholds. They also pose health risks to humans. Setting up bait stations around the exterior of the home and performing exclusion on the structure can prevent mice and rodents from invading your home.

3. When it’s time for spring-cleaning, homeowners should move leaves, littler, and debris at least 10 feet away from the side of the home, underneath decks, and in window wells. This will prevent pests and rodents from nesting around the base of your structure and finding easy access inside the home. Once the debris has been moved, the house should be sprayed on the exterior to protect against pests for the season.

4. Do you own or work in a restaurant? If there’s flies or rodents in food service areas proper sanitation, making sure all surfaces, drains and garbage disposals are clean and rid of any food items helps prevent these pests. Restaurants and commercial buildings should thoroughly clean their kitchen regularly and make sure all dumpsters are secure. These tips and an experienced pest control professional are key to keeping your food establishment free of unwanted pests.

6. You CAN control mosquitoes! Mosquito season is right around the corner, homeowners should make every effort to drain and empty any standing water in buckets or containers to prevent potential breeding areas. Mosquitoes can produce thousands of eggs in a single hatching, and lay their eggs on standing water. Eliminating their breeding grounds and having the yard sprayed for mosquitoes will help keep these nuisance pests away.
